CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting Oct. 6 for Nature’s Café at Nature’s Storehouse, 19-21 Main St.
Owners Clark and Yen Maine, the fifth owners since the store opened on Main Street in 1972, joined Sandy Maine and Steve Hunt of Empire State Development for the ceremony.
The project removed the wall between 19 and 21 Main St., doubling the store’s footprint and adding a kitchen and sit-down café. Four upstairs apartments also were renovated.
“We wanted a place downtown where people can slow down, eat local food, and run into their neighbors over the best coffee in town,” Clark Maine said.
The café also features the restored sign from Willow Island Restaurant, believed to have been the North Country’s first vegetarian restaurant. The sign hangs above the café’s vegetarian soups.
The project was supported by NY Forward, Empire State Development and National Grid.
Nature’s Café is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
