SUNY Canton announces transfer scholarship in honor of National Transfer Student Week

CANTON — SUNY Canton is offering a transfer student scholarship in celebration of National Transfer Student Week, Oct. 19-23.

The college will enter transfer students who submit an application by Dec. 1 into a drawing for one of five $1,000 scholarships to help cover non-tuition expenses. To apply, visit https://www.canton.edu/apply/.

SUNY Canton Executive Director of Admissions Melissa J. Evans said the scholarship is a gesture of support for students who choose the college to continue their education.

“Students have so many choices in the college search process, so we appreciate those who entrust us to help them move forward toward their degree goal,” Evans said.

The college has a team of professionals who specialize in helping transfer students transition to SUNY Canton, she said.

“Even though we enroll hundreds of transfer students annually, each is unique. We are well-equipped to assist every single student who wants to continue their education here,” Evans said.

Unlike many for-profit and private institutions, SUNY Canton provides free, unofficial credit evaluations before students apply or enroll. Evaluations are completed in days, not weeks, Evans said.

“Asking for an unofficial evaluation does not require payment of any application or enrollment fees, so there is a lot of freedom for those who are weighing their options. Plus, we can advise on the degree path scenarios that have the shortest time to completion,” she said.

The college accepts most passing grades and has no limit on the number of credits students can transfer. It has also removed restrictions on older coursework, allowing students returning to college after an extended break to potentially receive credit for previous studies, Evans said.

In addition to an open house scheduled for Nov. 14, the college offers several opportunities for prospective students to speak one-on-one with an admissions counselor about transfer options.

Virtual evening events are held Tuesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. The next virtual Drop-In Days are scheduled for Nov. 16-19, from 4 to 7 p.m.
