CANTON — While today people all around the globe watch Hollywood movies and play the same games on their phones, one hundred years ago methods of entertainment were considerably more humble and local.
The many ways that past inhabitants of St. Lawrence County entertained themselves will be put on display in the new exhibition, “Arts & Entertainment in St. Lawrence County,” and its curator, Cassidy Percoco, will speak on that topic at the SLCHA at noon Thursday, Sept. 27. Brown Bag Lunches are free and open to the public. Bring a lunch and enjoy a beverage and dessert provided by SLCHA.
The Brown Bag Lunch lecture and the exhibition are part of the 17th annual Remington Arts Festival in the village of Canton. During the Festival, the SLCHA will also have children’s toys and games and nineteenth-century costumes for dress-up fun inside the Silas Wright House on Saturday, September 29th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
All families are welcome to try their hand at historic games like marbles and pick-up-sticks, and see how kids played before batteries and computers. The museum and new exhibition will also be open to the public at the same time.
The St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House is open Tuesday through Thursday noon to 4 p.m., Friday noon to 6 p..m, and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the museum is free; admission to the archives is free for members and children, $2.50 for college students, and $5 for the general public.
The St. Lawrence County Historical Association is located at 3 East Main St.
