Despite several close chances in the second half, the SUNY Canton women’s soccer team didn’t have an answer for the University of Maine, Presque Isle’s Lainey Herring, as she connected for four of the Owls five goals Friday night defeating the Roos 5-1.
Herring opened the scoring in the 31st minute firing a breakaway shot past Roos goaltender Colleen Fagan (Bath, N.Y.) into the upper left corner. She went on to score two more before the Roos Chelsea Allen (Marcellus, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the year on a beautifully placed direct kick just under the crossbar from 30 yards out in the 60th minute. Audra Kirk closed out the scoring for the Owls with 2:47 remaining.
Fagan and Holli-Jo Cota (Ogdensburg, N.Y.), who took over for the Roos in the second half, combined for four saves.
The Roos face the Owls in Canton again tomorrow, with kick-off set for 1 p.m.
