POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will present a series of free performances featuring students, faculty and guest artists throughout October.
All performances are free and open to the public. A full schedule of upcoming live performances is available online.
The Crane Symphony Orchestra, directed by Michael J. Colburn (Hon. '12), will present its fall concert Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. The program will include Johannes Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80," Nancy Galbraith's "Euphonic Blues" and "Adventures on Earth," the finale from John Williams' score for "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." A Chamber Winds Concert featuring Crane faculty and friends will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater. Dr. Brian K. Doyle will conduct the performance, which will include Igor Stravinsky's "Octet for Wind Instruments" and Charles Gounod's "Petite Symphonie." Performers include Julianne Kirk Doyle, Brian Dunbar, Max Grube, William Hallenbeck, Anna Hendrickson, Christopher Hernacki, Christine Hoerning, Christopher Keach, Carol Lowe, Peter McCoy, Molly Murphy, Luke Spence and Mackenzie Sweeney.
The Crane Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. SeungYoung Hong, will present "City Sketches" Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Proscenium Theater in the Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature works inspired by New York City, including Duke Ellington's "A Tone Parallel to Harlem," a Buddy Rich Big Band arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story" medley and Oliver Nelson's "Jazzhattan Suite." The concert will follow a brief intermission.
Dr. Julianne Kirk Doyle, clarinet, and Keilor Kastella, piano, will present a faculty recital Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Snell Theater.
Percussionist Emma Gierzsal will join Kirk Doyle and Kastella for works including Libby Larsen's "Corker," "Sonata" by James Kirk and Douglas Lilburn's "Sonatina." The program will also include the consortium premiere of Reena Esmail's "unravelation" and the world premiere of Stacy Garrop's "The Art of Ballet," commissioned by a consortium of 20 clarinetists led by Kirk Doyle.
The October schedule will continue with the following performances, all at 7:30 p.m.:
Guest artist Thomas Leleu, a tuba player who has performed as a soloist in more than 40 countries, will be in residence at Crane Thursday, Oct. 22. He will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. that evening in Snell Theater. Leleu has performed both classical music and jazz and has released six albums.
