DICKINSON -- A Potsdam man was charged with drunk driving after state police said he struck an Amish buggy on State Route 11B and then left the scene of the accident.
Howard D. King II, 33, was charged when state police, responding to a report of the collision, encountered his vehicle with heavy front-end damage leaving the scene.
State police said King was traveling north on 11B when he tried to pass an Amish horse and buggy. His automobile struck the rear of the buggy when overtaking it. King's vehicle then struck a mailbox at 65 State Route 11B and then left the scene.
The driver of the buggy, 54-year-old David A. Schlabach, and a passenger, 9-year-old Andy D. Schlabach, both of North Lawrence, were transported to the Alice Hyde Memorial Hospital in Malone with injuries. Two other occupants, 17-year-old Jonas D. Schlabach, and 14-year-old Mattie D. Schlabach, were not injured.
King had a blood alcohol content of 0.10% troopers said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated.
He was ticketed and released. He is scheduled to appear in Dickinson town court at a later date.
