NORWOOD -- Attorney Alex Lesyk is running for St. Lawrence County Family Court Judge on the Democrat line.

“I currently have the privilege of being Principal Court Attorney for the Honorable Robert G. Main, Jr., the Acting Family Court Judge in Franklin County, where I assist in all aspects of Family Law, including conferencing with attorneys and drafting judicial decisions. In the past 30+ years, I have handled every type of case involving North Country children and their families, including child neglect and abuse, juvenile delinquency, child custody and visitation, and domestic violence matters requiring orders of protection for vulnerable family members. I have also represented children with special education needs in local schools and successfully prosecuted child homicide and sex crimes cases. Having practiced law in Family Court for over three decades, and now working in the Family Court system, I have the experience and knowledge needed to be your Family Court Judge.”

Lesyk is a board member of Maximizing Independent Living Choices (formerly the Massena Independent Living Center), which provides a wide variety of support services to local children and families dealing with disabilities. He is also a past member of the St. Lawrence County Workforce Investment Board’s Youth Council. Lesyk was the co-coordinator of the annual St. Lawrence County High School Mock Trial Competition at SUNY Canton. In addition to sponsoring the county competition, he recruited local lawyers to mentor North Country students for the county and state-level competitions.

“Before accepting the position as Principal Court Attorney to Acting Family Court Judge Main, I was an Associate Professor of Legal Studies and the Business Department Chair at SUNY Canton. I instructed hundreds of students in law and ethics. I also recruited and supervised local attorneys who were hired as part-time instructors. I was invited several times to teach police cadets at the David Sullivan - St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy as well as local Justice Court judges, attorneys, and police administrators,” Leysk said in a prepared statement.

Lesyk is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court. He was awarded the Denison

Ray Criminal Defender Staff Award from the New York State Bar Association for his representation of low-income clients. He was also recently appointed by the New York State Court of Appeals to the Unified Court System Tribal Courts Committee, which strives to resolve Tribal Court issues with state and federal courts, including cases involving the Indian Child Welfare Act.

Lesyk graduated from Columbia University with a degree in psychology and earned his law degree from Fordham University School of Law.
