CANTON – A Madrid man faces a driving with ability impaired charge after his truck struck two pedestrians late Friday night on Main Street in the village of Canton.
Nicholas Rycroft, 28, was turning left off Riverside Drive onto Main Street at 10:32 p.m. when his 2017 Ram 1500 hit two people crossing Main St. A BAC of 0.06 was registered in a breathalyzer test, according to Canton police.
Both individuals were transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, said police.
Rycroft was also ticketed with failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians and operating a motor vehicle using an electronic device. He is scheduled to appear in Canton Town Court on Jan. 8.
Canton Fire Chief Bob Crowe in a post on the Canton Fire Department website said units were on scene in minutes to find two persons lying in the road, injured. The victims were being cared for by members of the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, who had been eating at Sergi's and sprung into action when a person came into the restaurant saying someone had been hit by a car.
Ten Canton fire personnel assisted Canton Rescue with patient care and law enforcement with traffic control.
