CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators will meet in special session Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. to discuss sales tax legislation in Albany.
The county has been seeking an increase in its share of the sales tax levy, from three to four percent.
The board has expressed its desire to be able to make the change, but requests by the board for bills in the state Senate and Assembly that would be required to accomplish it have not been met with unanimous support by local state representatives.
Democrat Assembly Member Addie Rusell of Theresa -- one of four Assembly members who represent the county -- has introduced a bill in that body in behalf of the county.
But the three state senators representing St. Lawrence County -- Republicans Patty Ritchie of Heuvelton, Joe Griffo of Rome, and Elizabeth Little of Queensbury – who have opposed it on anti-tax grounds this week said they have been persuaded to sponsor a bill allowing the county to proceed with a sales tax increase.
According to a statement from the County Board of Legislators' administrative office, the Monday meeting will be to consider moving forward in light of the newfound support.
