African politics lecture

CANTON: St. Lawrence University will host Sean Jacobs, associate professor of international affairs at The New School in New York City, who will deliver the 2018 C.L.R. James lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in Eben Holden; event is free and open to the public; in his lecture, “A new political vocabulary: What kinds of futures come after nationalism for Africa?” Jacobs acknowledges the current state of African politics; dominated by national liberation or legacy political parties riddled with various forms of corruption.

Photography talk

CANTON: St. Lawrence University’s Art Collaborative’s “Photographing the Invisible” series, 4:30 p.m., Herring Cole’s Feinstone Room and will feature a conversation with photographer, photo editor, and mental health/wellness writer Danielle Hark, the creator of Broken Light Collective, a community of photographers who are affected by mental illness; will present her work and how it relates to her personal coping with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder; workshop with Hark, titled “Photographing as a Therapeutic Tool,” will follow her talk from 9 a.m.-noon on Friday, March 1, will discuss how she has used photography to deal with her depression, the workshop will dive into photographic methods to cope with personal mental illness; free and open to the public; RSVP for workshop: sknobel@stlawu.edu or call 315-229-5166.

Leadership workshop

POTSDAM: St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with Tedra L. CANTON: Cyber Seniors class on smartphones and tablets, 2:30-4 p.m., St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, 40 W. Main St.; offered by county Office for the Aging, taught by St. Lawrence University students; classes are free to those 60 and older with little or no knowledge, as well as those who want to gain more knowledge of tablets, smartphones and computers; classes are offered in I & II part sessions, so registration will be for 2 classes to be sure topics are covered fully; must bring your own tablet or smartphone.
