Waddington tracker and his dogs to assist hunters again this season

WADDINGTON — Hunting season for bear is now open, with early bow season for deer opening this weekend, Tom Rausch with his tracking dogs Luna, and Kunox are back for their sixth tracking season.

If a hunter shoots a deer or bear and is unable to locate it, don’t hesitate to call, Rausch says.

Tom can be reached at (315) 854-2044. There is no charge for this service, but donations for gas are accepted.

The following tips will help increase your chances of a successful recovery:

• Be sure to have your hunting license with you as DEC is notified at the start of the track.

• Obtain permission from neighboring landowners to enter their property prior to our arrival. Inform them they are welcome to join us if they have any reservations about us going on their land.

• Clearly mark the hit site with ribbon, toilet paper, etc.

• Clearly mark the blood trail, walking to the side as you go. Avoid stepping in blood as this will spread a false trail through the woods. When you lose blood, do not grid search. Back out and call.
