POTSDAM -- New York State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the village Friday night.
Potsdam police responded to a report of an unconscious female on College Park Road, which is on SUNY Potsdam campus, around 5:51 p.m.
The victim has been identified as Elizabeth Howell, 21, Patterson, NY.
The investigation is ongoing but the preliminary investigation has determined this appears to be a isolated incident, state police said.
Officers reportedly located the victim lying on the side of the road with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Canton-Potsdam Hospital but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly before 7 p.m., according to SUNY Potsdam officials said
College officials issued a “shelter in place until further notice” alert at 7:52 p.m. last night shortly after the incident.
College officials later lifted that notice and told students they can leave campus if they are comfortable. Students were told to travel in groups and university police will provide safety escorts on request.
SUNY Potsdam spokesperson Alex Jacobs-Wilke said she was unsure if alert has been lifted for the community as a whole and was waiting for more information from law enforcement this morning.
Local police agencies are continuing to ask members of the public in both St. Lawrence County and neighboring Franklin County to be vigilant, as there may still be an active threat to the community. Lock your doors, and report any suspicious activity.
Potsdam police dispatch said they were not able to give any information at this time about the incident. State police were unavailable for comment.
Law enforcement agencies are still seeking the suspect, college officials said. No description of the suspect has been given.
At the request of Potsdam police, state police are leading the investigation. However, anyone with information about the case is asked to call Potsdam Police at 315-265-2121.
State Police and Potsdam Police are being assisted by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office, the University Police Department at SUNY Potsdam, and federal Homeland Security Investigations.
