MASSENA – A truck snapped a power pole in Massena this morning, knocking out power to an area around Barnhart Road and Reed Drive, near Jefferson Elementary School.
The pole was replaced and power restored to the neighborhood within two and a half hours, according to the Massena Electric Department (MED) chief.
A witness said the driver told police he had been looking for Barnhart Island but ended up on Barnhart Road instead.
Power to the elementary school, about a quarter mIle from the accident scene, was not interrupted, according to school personnel.
The witness said the pole had a transformer on it and, ironically, she said, the truck was carrying transformers.
MED General Manager Andy McMahon said the truck apparently hit a down-guide, a cable that supports the pole, and snapped the top of the pole.
"That blew fuses that protect the equipment and people in that neighborhood," McMahon said.
He said the pole had been replaced and power restored to the neighborhood within two and a half hours.
