During their Aug. 15 to Sept. 1 “Drunk Driving, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown in St. Lawrence County and around the state, New York State Troopers say they issued nearly 46,584 tickets.
Of the tickets issued, 18,350 were for speeding, 1,937 for distracted driving, 2,667 child restraint and seatbelt violations and 850 were "move over" tickets, troopers said. "Move over" means the driver allegedly did not attempt pull onto the shoulder and stop when a first responder approached with sirens turned on.
They did not include specific figures for St. Lawrence County.
Troopers say they set up checkpoints that stopped more than 19,000 vehicles during that time span, and it resulted in 663 driving while intoxicated arrests.
During Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, troopers say they issued upwards of 9,000 tickets.
Again, they did not include specific figures for St. Lawrence County.
They say that breaks down to 3,904 for speeding, 497 seatbelt violations, 153 "move over" law violations, 310 for distracted driving and 168 for DWI.
Troopers say in that time period, they investigated 317 accidents resulting in 171 injuries and three deaths.
