Canton Middle School Green Team students, their advisors Megan Bonner and Kierstin Sovie, and the Village of Canton Tree Committee recently planted four sugar maples on the Canton Middle School grounds near the district office entrance. Scott Sanderson, who oversees the buildings and grounds at the school, selected spots for the trees. Carol Wright and students from the school's agriculture class dug the holes. Canton Mayor Michael Dalton supplied funding. Canton High School District Superintendent Joe McDonough, Principal Bob Kotz, and middle school Principal Sarah Towler supported the project. Steve Sherwood of NYSDEC provided instruction and demonstrations to the students on the proper methods of planting a tree. A plaque will be dedicated on July 4. John Casserly, retired history teacher, participated in the planting and gave a short speech about the 250th anniversary of the country. The planting was made possible through a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Photo submitted by Larissa Fawkner.
