CANTON -- A Civil War Roundtable with Elizabeth Regosin will discuss African Americans in the transition from slavery to freedom.
She will discuss the New York City Riots of 1863 Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, 3 East Main St.
The riots began in response to the 1863 draft and Irish fear of blacks. The rioters controlled the streets for four days, sacking shops and homes and lynching or torturing blacks. The draft riot killed or wounded 700 people and caused $1 million in property damage. Peace was only restored after the federal army was sent into the city.
