POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will host visiting scholar Dr. J. Peter Burkholder, a distinguished professor of musicology at Indiana University, from Feb. 23 to 24 which will include a talk before a Crane Symphony Orchestra concert Feb. 24.

An eminent music scholar, Dr. Burkholder has written and edited four books on Charles Ives, and is the co-author of one of the most widely used music history textbooks, "A History of Western Music." In 2010, he became the youngest person to be named an honorary member of the American Musicological Society.

Burkholder will attend a variety of educational events at Crane, leading up to a special all-Ives Crane Symphony Orchestra concert. His visit is being funded in part by the Crane Student Association.

"All of us at Crane, both faculty and students, feel so fortunate and grateful that Professor Burkholder has agreed to spend two days with us in the middle of a typically daunting North Country winter, to help guide us through the sometimes mysterious-seeming works of Charles Ives -- that most decidedly American composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We look forward to welcoming him to our campus with both honor and delight," said Dr. Nelly Case, chair of the Crane Department of Music Theory, History and Composition.

The Crane Symphony Orchestra will present its first concert of the spring semester on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. Burkholder will offer a pre-concert talk beforehand, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the Ralph Wakefield Recital Hall.

The orchestra will present works by Charles Ives, including Symphony No. 2, and "The Unanswered Question," as well as a selected song cycle for tenor and orchestra, featuring Dr. Lonel Woods. "Six Songs by Charles Ives" was arranged by Crane School of Music Associate Dean Dr. David Heuser.
