CANTON -- A SUNY Canton police officer has been recognized by New York State for his actions in rescuing from the Grasse River a young man attempting suicide.
On April 22, 2014, Officer Daniel Callahan of the University Police at SUNY Canton was called to the campus footbridge and saw a young man with a rope around his neck preparing to jump.
Callahan ran to the man and tried to grab him before he could jump. When this failed, Callahan quickly cut the rope with his knife, dropping the man into high, cold, fast moving water swollen by rain and snowmelt. He then swam to the man and pulled him to shore, where he was assisted by other responders.
Callahan and five other officers statewide were nominated for incidents during 2014.
These officers will each receive a Certificate of Exceptional Valor from Governor Cuomo.
Callahan, SUNY Canton Deputy Chief Alan Mulkin, Lt. Brian Kurish, and Canton Police Sgt. James Santimaw were honored in a SUNY police ceremony last November for their actions in the incident.
