St. Regis Falls School District dealing with state audit issues

ST. REGIS FALLS – St. Regis Falls Central School District officials are taking steps to address issues identified by a recent state audit.

The Office of the New York State Comptroller recently completed an audit in which it reviewed with school district officials a variety of financial records from July 1, 2019, to March 31, 2021.

Auditors found that the district missed out on $11,530 in Medicaid reimbursements for services provided to students over that time period. The services that weren’t submitted for reimbursement included speech language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and psychological counseling. Though 1,417 services were eligible to be reimbursed, claims were not submitted for 381 of them.

“We take all of the findings that occurred between July 2019 and March 2021 very seriously,” said District Treasurer Michael Tallman. “We worked collaboratively with the Comptroller’s Office to identify these issues, and we’re now doing everything we can to ensure that we claim every dollar that can be reimbursed to the district through Medicaid.”

District administrators and the St. Regis Falls Central School District Board of Education’s Audit Committee members put together a corrective action plan. It includes new policies that set up a timeline for providers to submit their service notes, a regular schedule for the business office to check reimbursements, and monthly meetings to ensure that the new action plan items are being kept up.

The corrective action plan is now being implemented by service providers and administrators.
