St. Lawrence County veterans groups, churches, organizations prepare for Memorial Day festivities on Monday

Veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice will be honored at Memorial services this weekend throughout St. Lawrence County. 

Canton - A memorial mass will then take place Monday, May 27, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Canton. Attendees are asked to bring a chair. In the event of rain, there will be Mass only, at Saint Mary’s Church at 9 a.m. in Canton.

Edward C. Seymour Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1231 will conduct a wreath ceremony on the Main Street Bridge at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Memorial Day ceremony in the Canton Village Park at 11 a.m.

Potsdam - The Amvets Post 282 has canceled its Memorial Day Parade and ceremonies  in Potsdam on Monday, May 27, due to forecasts of thunderstorms.

Norwood - In the village of Norwood, the annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 11 a.m. at 10 Maple Street.

A ceremony hosted by the American Legion will follow in the park on Park Street.

Colton - The annual Colton Fire Department Memorial parade will start on Riverside Drive near the fire station.  It will begin at 10:30 a.m. and stop at the Memorial Park for a wreath laying.  The parade will continue to St. Patrick's Cemetery, located on Wildwood Road for a memorial service.  The parade will then leave there and march to Pleasant Mound Cemetery for a memorial service.  

South Colton - The parade at South Colton will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m., starting at the post office and going to the South Colton Cemetery on Snell Road for a memorial service.  Please share this information.  The parade will not be starting at the school on Route 56.

Madrid - The Madrid Volunteer Fire Department will host Memorial Day parade starting at 9 a.m. on Cross Street. The procession will end by the Madrid Hepburn Library. A short ceremony will follow.

DeKalb - A memorial service will be held Monday, May 27, at 8 a.m. at St. Henry’s Cemetery in DeKalb Junction.

Hermon - The Memorial Day parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. with parade participants to begin lining up at 10 a.m. The parade will start at the Hermon Post Office and end at the cemetery.

A service will follow the parade at the cemetery. A potluck to follow the service at the Fire Department.

Ogdensburg - The Ogdensburg Veterans Association will hold a Memorial Day ceremony Monday at the Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial Monument at 10 a.m.

Lay Chaplain Larry Caufield will hold a prayer service and read aloud the names of all St. Lawrence County Armed Forces veterans who died in that war.

The service will last roughly 25 minutes.

The entire community is invited and encouraged to come out and show support for all men and women who have served and are still serving and to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

A gathering will be held at 11 a.m. in the Veteran's Plot in the Ogdensburg Cemetery, which will be led by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War 2936 in Ogdensburg. VFW Commander Scott Campo will also lead wreath laying ceremonies at various monuments there.

Massena - The Memorial Day parade will begin at 10:30 a.m., starting at Sacred Heart Church on Main Street before making its way to Veteran's Memorial Park, located on Andrews Street.  

A ceremony will be held in the park immediately following the parade.

AMVETS Post 4 will host the parade and ceremony.

Waddington - A parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the village of Waddington, progressing from the downtown pavilion up Main Street.

A ceremony will follow at the intersection of State Highway 37 and Main Street at the Veteran's Memorial. Flowers and wreaths will be laid at the site, including from the town of Waddington, Village of Waddington, American Legion Post 25, Legion Auxiliary, Fire and Rescue Squads, as well as the Boy Scouts.

A chicken BBQ will follow at the American Legion.

Heuvelton - A Memorial Day observance service will be held Sunday, May 26,  at Hillcrest Cemetery at 1 p.m. and Pinecrest Cemetery at 2 p.m. Luncheon will  follow at Amvets Post 1997, 107 State St., Heuvelton.
