St. Lawrence County Legislature recognizes Constitution Week

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County legislature on Monday passed a resolution naming Sept. 17 to 23 “Constitution Week.”

Two members of the local Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) chapter spoke during public comment and thanked the board for introducing the motion, which later passed unanimously.

Barb McBurney told the board that the DAR got Congress to pass a bill in 1955 designating a Constitution Week each year.

"This is a time for Americans to reaffirm the ideals the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 ... to vigilantly protect the freedoms given to us,” she said.

"Let us take the time to study, understand and support the Constitution," DAR member Madeleine Pennington told the board.

County Legislator Kevin Acres, R-Madrid, introduced the resolution.

"[The Constitution] truly is indeed the guardian of our liberties, particularly the Bill of Rights. The first 10 amendments are being challenged over and over,” Acres said. "I wholeheartedly support this resolution."
