POTSDAM -- The St. Lawrence County Arts Council recently purchased a permanent pottery wheel through the “Purchase a Pottery Wheel” campaign thanks to a crowd-funding campaign through Adirondack Gives.

This February, pottery teacher Isaac Snell taught his tenth pottery class since June of 2013 at SLC Arts. These classes included two private sessions for a local group of homeschooled teens.

“We’re happy to schedule private sessions with our teachers when possible. As long as we have a group of at least four students who are committed to work together, we can try to schedule a special class session for them,” says Suzy McBroom, Grants and Education Coordinator at SLC Arts.

McBroom will be scheduling additional pottery classes with Snell soon thanks to the $700 raised to purchase a permanent pottery wheel for SLC Arts. The new wheel will enable SLC Arts to begin offering intermediate level classes.

Other highlights in the February class schedule included hand-drumming, printmaking, and kids dance classes. Len Mackey offered West African Hand-Drumming for teens and adults; Mackey hopes to develop a regularly scheduled drumming circle at SLC Arts.

Rebekah Wilkins-Pepiton taught a Monotype Printmaking class, and found that many of her students had previous printmaking experience but registered so they could work with the medium in a social environment. She is also discussing scheduling regular opportunities to work with monotype and other printmaking processes.

Katie Binder, a senior at SUNY Potsdam majoring in Dance with a minor in Pre-Creative Arts Therapy, taught her first class at SLC Arts this February. Her dance classes for ages 3-6 will continue through the spring, and there is still space for more 5-6 year olds to start her classes in March.

All community classes meet at Downtown Snell Hall, 41 Elm St, room 229 and 230.
