Spring in January: Warm, wet conditions expected in St. Lawrence Valley this weekend, but watch for ice

Unseasonable warmth and rain are the dominant weather features predicted by the National Weather Service for the next few days in the North Country.

Rain is considered likely today and tonight, and patchy fog is predicted for tomorrow, while more rain is expected Sunday. In the higher elevations, the NWS is warning of the possibility of freezing rain.

High temperatures will be in the 40s today and reaching to near 50 Saturday and Sunday, with above-freezing temps, but that could change Sunday night and Monday with a chance of snow and sleet both days.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and the northwestern Adirondacks:

• This Afternoon: A 50 percent chance of rain, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 43. Southeast wind around 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tonight: Rain likely, mainly before 10pm. Patchy fog after 10pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 36. South wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Saturday: Patchy fog before noon. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 49. South wind 7 to 11 mph.

• Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers after 4am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 38. South wind 8 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Sunday: Showers likely, mainly between 10am and 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 50. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Sunday Night: A chance of rain before 4am, then a chance of rain, snow, and sleet. Cloudy, with a low around 29. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Monday: A chance of snow and sleet before 7am, then a chance of snow between 7am and 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 33. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

• Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16.

• Tuesday: Cloudy, with a high near 34.

• Tuesday Night: Cloudy, with a low around 19.

• Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 27. Breezy.

• Wednesday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 6. Breezy.
