MADRID — Parents and students in all St. Lawrence County school districts are invited to a Mental Health Awareness Event on Wednesday, May 29, at Madrid-Waddington Central.

The Riley Basford Legacy Fund and the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau are hosting the event which features speakers, information booths, and self-care activities for teens.

“The goal of this event is to break the stigma related to mental health,” said Madrid-Waddington Central Principal Joe Binion. “Presentations and an information session for parents, as well as strategies on managing and dealing with stress for students, will fill the evening.”

Yoga, mindfulness, teen-to-teen talks; and a “hidden mischief” room are planned. A classroom will be set up as that of a teenager and parents are challenged to find the hidden drug use, alcohol, and other similar items.

Seaway Valley Prevention Council and SLC Suicide Awareness Coalition will also attend the event.

Dr. Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University, will discuss mental health, cellphones and social media.

Pizza and wings will be available from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
