Sophomore Morgan Smith worked his way past the Rochester defense and scored the game's only goal with just over 12 minutes to play as St. Lawrence University's men's soccer team upended the 12th-ranked University of Rochester 1-0 in a NCAA Division III soccer game at Sandy MacAllaster Field Friday afternoon.

Senior Andrew Bednarsky started the game-winning play in what was a tight defensive game from start to finish. Bednarsky threaded a pass through the Yellowjacket defense from just inside the midfield line, sending Smith in on the left side. Smith got a step on the Rochester defender as he gathered in the pass and went in on Rochester goalie Mike Moranz, beating him to the lower right side for his first goal as a Saint.

The Saints limited Rochester, which had scored 13 goals in its first two games, to just three shots on goal and a total of nine shot attempts for the game. Rochester was nearly as stingy as the Saints also had three shots on goal and 12 total attempts with Rochester holding a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Moranz finished with two saves for 2-1 Rochester while goalkeeper Aaron Costello improved to 2-0 on the season with his second straight shutout, making three saves.

Costello had to come up big on Rochester's lone shot on goal in the first half as Shane Dobles broke in alone on goal as the Saints argued for offsides, but Costello challenged and smothered Dobles' straight on shot. The Saint keeper also stuffed Keith Grafmeyer on a one-on-one shot from in close with 3:15 to go as Rochester turned up the offensive pressure in the final minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.

The Saints, 2-1 beat Rochester for the third straight year and lead the series between the two New York State powerhouses 28-19-5. SLU will return to action at 2 pm. Saturday when it hosts Geneseo while Rochester concludes its North Country trip with a 2 pm game at Clarkson.
