SLC legislature forms ad hoc committee to find District 13 replacement despite two candidates in active race

CANTON -- The seat to represent District 13 remains vacant on the St. Lawrence County Legislature despite the legislature hosting a special meeting Oct. 19 with the sole purpose of appointing a replacement after John Gennett resigned the seat Oct. 5.

Instead, legislators opted to create an ad hoc committee to find a replacement, with the plan to find a replacement who would be appointed during the Finance Committee meeting.

What makes the situation more peculiar is the ongoing race between Republican Terry Goodrich and Democrat Setcher Krywanzyk, who were already running to replace Gennett after he opted to not seek reelection.

Gennett, who recently resigned the position representing District 13, took a job out of state.

He recently confirmed with North Country This Week he still lives in his district and merely resigned because of the time commitment required to travel for work.

"I still live in the North Country and plan to be involved. I have a number of things I'm working on but the time needed to travel for work each week would not have allowed me to be as effective a member of the legislature as I felt would be necessary for my constituents," Gennett said.

First elected to the legislature in 2022, Gennett was finishing the fourth year of his term.

He opted to not seek reelection, confirming the matter with North Country This Week during the summer.

Though he was a newcomer to the board at the time, Gennett was a vocal advocate for infrastructure expansion and redevelopment throughout the county.

Leaning on his engineering background from his time in the Marine Corps, Gennett also brought a pragmatic approach to county affairs as it relates to solar projects, data centers and expansion of the power grid with the Smart Path Connect Project.

Legislators tackled a similar situation earlier this year with the May resignation of Ben Hull, who was leaving the legislature to join the Air Force to serve in JAG after completing law school.

Replacing Hull was Allan Robinson, who is seeking election to the seat to represent District 8.
