Salmon River middle schoolers cast ballots in mock election

FORT COVINGTON -- Salmon River Middle School students chose Hillary Clinton for the next president in a mock election Tuesday.

Library Media Specialist Michelle Oakes and Home-School Coordinator Tim Cook hosted the mock election. The event was planned after many students expressed an interest in holding a mock election.

“They understood, largely because of conversations that were taking place in their homes, that this was considered a history-making event,” according to Oakes.

Several other election-related classroom activities culminated in yesterday’s election.

Oakes said, “In grade 6, students discussed the candidates in their Monday Meetings. In grades 7 and 8, students researched the candidates in Social Studies and explored where they, themselves, stood on certain issues that candidates had been question on. Then, in their math class, they looked closely at how the Electoral College plays a role in electing candidates despite the popular vote.”

The election was well received by staff and students. After the votes were tabulated, the middle school chose to elect Hillary Clinton.

Below are the results, including total number of voters.

Hillary Clinton 202, Donald Trump, Gary Johnson 16, Jill Stein 33, Other 6
