Kiera Taussig scored a pair of goals, caused two turnovers and contributed four draw controls for the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team but it was not enough as the Saints fell to SUNY Geneseo by a score of 13-6 Saturday afternoon in the home opener for St. Lawrence on North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton.
The teams traded goals in the first four minutes of action as Caroline Bailey scored for St. Lawrence (3-4) but Geneseo opened up a 5-1 lead with the next four consecutive goals before Taussig stopped the run with the first of two goals on the day.
Abigail Owens scored to trim the lead to 5-3 with 3:34 left in the opening half and that is how the score remained until the intermission.
In the second half, the Knights scored the first seven straight goals to pull ahead 12-3 before Chloe Knapp scored from close range after a Geneseo foul to stop the rally and start a St. Lawrence three-goal run.
Julia Mitiguy and Taussig added goals for the Saints in the three-goal run to cut the lead in half at 12-6 with 3:11 left to play.
Geneseo added a late goal at the 37-second mark to close out the scoring.
Taussig led the Saints with her two points on the pair of goals while Bailey, Owens Mitiguy and Knapp each scored once. Hayden Stein and Kayla Schmalz recorded assists for St. Lawrence.
Olga Lukas recorded eight saves in the Saints goal for her first loss of the season.
The Saints will face SUNY Potsdam Tuesday afternoon in the second game of a lacrosse doubleheader as the St. Lawrence Men face SUNY Geneseo at 3 pm with the Women's game set to start at 5:30 pm.
