Senior tri-captain Rylee Smith tallied a goal and junior goaltender Carmen MacDonald made 33 stops as the St. Lawrence women's hockey battled Yale to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon in New Haven.
Smith missed Friday night's contest against Brown, but came up big for the Saints on Saturday. Despite being outshot by the Bulldogs in the first period 16-7, it wasthe Saints who struck first at the 16:56 of the opening session when the Hagersville, Ontario native beat Yale goaltender Jaimie Leonoff. Freshmen Kirsten Padalis and Alex Moore picked up assists on the play.
"That was an entertaining up and down hockey game tonight," Saints Head Coach Chris Wells said. "Yale's intensity to start the game was unmatched by us. By the end of the second period we have some good jump and started to control the play." He added: "Yale is a very improved team and will be very tough to play down the stretch."
The Saints carried their 1-0 lead and momentum into the third period, but Yale's Taylor Marchin finally solved Carmen MacDonald at the 13 minute mark to pull even at 1-1 and send the game to overtime.
"We had some fantastic looks in OT and Leonoff was there to shut the door," Wells said. The Saints outshot the Bulldogs 6-2 in the bonus frame. Leonoff finished with 30 stops for the Bulldogs.
The Saints will return to Appleton Arena next weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests against Cornell and Colgate.
