St. Lawrence University first-year student Masha Kolesnikova posted a career-high 16 kills and junior Mariah Dignan added a career-high 26 digs, leading the Saints back from a 2-0 deficit to stun SUNY Potsdam, 3-2, on Tuesday night in a five set thriller in Potsdam, NY.
Kolesnikova, the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week, sparked her team to the dramatic 23-25, 15-25, 27-25, 25-20, 15-13, as St. Lawrence won its sixth consecutive match. Meanwhile, the Bears fall to 6-14 after losing to the Saints for the third time this season, while St. Lawrence improves to 16-8.
"I thought Potsdam played outstanding tonight, especially defensively and we didn't match their intensity at the beginning," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "However, we fought hard the last three sets and to take this win away on the road feels very good right now. It wasn't our prettiest win, but we'll certainly take it."
Dignan paced the Scarlet and Brown defensively, while classmate Lexi Brown had 12 kills and 10 digs. Katarina Marczeski finished with a team-high 32 assists.
Chelsea Sunday matched Kolesnikova's 16 kills for SUNY Potsdam and Annie Smith added 12. Gabby Arana also had 26 assists for the Bears, who totaled 12 service aces in the match.
St. Lawrence will be in action again next weekend, Friday and Saturday, October 17 and 18, at the 2014 Hartwick Invitational in Oneonta, NY.
