First-year Kelsey Murphy drove in the eventual game-winning run with a triple in the fifth inning to help the St. Lawrence softball team to a 7-3 come-from-behind win over SUNY Canton on the Saints Softball Field on Thursday afternoon.
Fellow first-year student Emma Gailey (1-2) earned her first collegiate win in the circle allowing just four hits and three earned runs while striking out six. The Saints are now 10-8 overall this season, while SUNY Canton drops to 6-11.
The Saints found themselves in a 2-0 hole early, as Canton plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning with the help of two hits, a sacrifice bunt and a hit-by-pitch.
St. Lawrence erased the deficit in the bottom of the second inning when Laura Finley – who struck out to lead things off but reached first on a passed ball – scored on another passed ball later in the frame to cut the visitor's lead in half. After Gailey walked to put runners on first and third, sophomore Jordan Sheridan hit a slap single to third that brought Jacqueline Dufour home to tie the game.
Kylee Knight scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to give the Saints a 3-2 lead before Murphy tripled to left and plated Finley for the team's fourth run.
After Canton cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth, the Saints added three insurance runs to seal the victory. Knight had an RBI single to right to plate Sheridan and then came around to score on an RBI single to left by senior Aisha O'Connor. The Pembroke, Ont. native scored the team's seventh run following an error by the Roos second baseman on a ball hit by Emma Reakes.
Knight and Sheridan both finished with a pair of hits and a stolen base a piece for St. Lawrence.
The Saints will travel to Union and RPI on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, for a pair of Liberty League doubleheaders.
