St. Lawrence University's riding team continued an outstanding season at the 2014 Zone 2 Region 2 Regional Championship Horse Show at the Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall on Saturday, advancing all five of its competitors to the Zone Championships.
The top two in each event in Saturday's show qualified to advance to the Zone Championships in Fairfield, CT, April 6 where they will contend for individual bids to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship Show. The Saints will also compete as a team at the Zones after running away with Regional High Point team honors in the course of the show seasons.
Emily D'Alessandro won the regional championship in open equitation on the flat and was reserve champion in open equitation over fences behind teammate Alyssa Bokor. D'Alessandro and Bokor will be joined at zones by Regional Champions Emma Sutphen in intermediate on the flat and Jessie Lewis in novice equitation on the flat and reserve regional champion Mackenzie Alderman, who was second in intermediate fences.
In addition to her two zone qualifications on Saturday, D'Alessandro will ride against the other high point riders in Zone 2 for the right to advance to the nationals and compete for the USEF/Cacchione Cup which is presented to the top individual rider at nationals. D'Alessandro earned the regional high point rider honors for Region 2 with her performances during the show season. She is the first Saint regional high point rider since 2011.
St. Lawrence has competed as a team at nationals in each of the last three seasons and has back-to-back national championships following a reserve national championship finish in 2011.
