Saints ride early lead to sixth straight win

A game which started out looking like it could be a blowout turned interesting on Friday night, but St. Lawrence gathered itself late in the second period and went on to record its sixth straight win and seventh in its last eight with a 3-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Appleton Arena Friday night.

Alexander Dahl and Christian Horn scored first period goals and the Saints used their speed to constantly pressure the RPI defense. While they created chances, they couldn't add to the lead and RPI stayed in it.

"It was a little bit of a sloppy game," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "But on the other hand it was a lot like several of the others in our streak…we figured out a way to win.

"I thought we played a real good first period and really should have come out of it with a couple more goals. Their power play shifted the momentum in the second period, but we really did a good job on the reset and got things turned back in our favor for the third period."

The Saints, now 15-10-2 overall and 11-4-0 in ECAC play, have won seven of their last eight and are currently in second place in the ECAC. RPI dropped to 9-19-1 overall and 7-8-0 in league play following its third straight loss. The Saints improved to 6-5-1 at Appleton heading into a Saturday game against Union and are now 13-4-2 when scoring the first goal of the game and 13-0-1 when scoring three or more goals in a game.

Dahl opened the scoring 5:54 into the first period after he put a backhand between RPI goalie Jason Kasdorf and the post after freshman defenseman Nolan Gluchowski set him up with some neat stickhandling to work in close and then a quick goal mouth pass. It went to 2-0 when Horn soloed on Kasdorf after a RPI turnover between the faceoff circles and scored his fifth of the year at 11:17.

The Saints hit two posts and a crossbar in the first period as the score held at 2-0, and RPI made it interesting when senior wing Matt Neal gathered in a long stretch pass from junior center Mark Miller and broke away, scoring with a shot which went in off the crossbar against Saint goalie Kyle Hayton.

Hayton, both the ECAC Goalie and Rookie of the month for January, did not allow another goal the rest of the way, his eighth straight game allowing two or fewer goals, and the Saints added an insurance goal when freshman Mike Marnell scored his sixth of the year with a jam-in at the top of the crease as a delayed penalty was being indicated against the Engineers.

Hayton finished with 21 saves for the Saints and Kasdorf made 23 for RPI.

"Both teams were strong on the power play, even though no one scored, and part of that was good goaltending by both clubs," Carvel added. "It is always a good sign when you can change the momentum of a game in your favor later in the game, and we did that tonight."
