Melissa Grosshans scored for St. Lawrence, but the Saints were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to William Smith by a 3-1 score in a Liberty League field hockey game on Friday afternoon in Geneva, New York.
Alexandra Frary gave the Herons a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period, scoring off a rebound, and Hannah Wood increased the lead to two goals less than five minutes later, scoring off an assist from Shayla Meehan. Sierramarie Fitzgerald scored the third goal of the game for William Smith in the 48th minute.
Grosshans scored her fifth goal of the season with less than 13 minutes to play, redirecting a drive by Cate MacKenzie on a penalty corner.
William Smith, which is receiving votes in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association national poll, outshot the Saints 26-9 and held a 17-4 edge in penalty corners. Sophie Cardenali made 11 saves for the Saints, while Emily King stopped two shots for the Herons, who improved to 12-3 overall, 4-2 in the Liberty League.
St. Lawrence, now 5-10, 1-5, will host the University of Rochester on Sunday at 3 p.m. for the team's senior day.
