AKWESASNE -- The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is reminding the public that the non-member fishing season will close on Oct. 10.
In a press release issued on Oct. 7, Tribal leaders said the season will reopen on May 31, 2027.
Non-members may not fish for any species during a closed season, including for catch and release, if they are within the Tribe's jurisdiction.
"SRMT jurisdiction includes the Southern waters of the St. Lawrence River and its affluents, including the St. Regis River, Raquette River, Salmon River and Grasse River. This also includes the areas where these waterways merge with the St. Lawrence River upstream within the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's jurisdiction," they said.
They continued, saying pursuant to the SRMT Non-Member Fishing Regulations and Law, the Compliance Department is delegated authority to act in the best interest of the Tribe, with respect to matters concerning fishing of any kind in SRMT waters.
"These actions are undertaken to ensure the continuation of natural resources such as fish, a culturally significant source of nutrition and economic development for Tribal Members," they said.
For more information, contact the SRMT Compliance Department by calling (518) 358-2273 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
