RUSSELL -- The Russell Volunteer Fire Department is getting $68,172 in federal funding for safety equipment.
“With the increasing mandates thrust upon fire departments on both the state and federal levels, small, rural departments such as ours are finding it extremely difficult to provide the appropriate safety gear for our members” said Russell Fire Chief Harvey Thomas.
“This award will bring all of our PPE (personal protective equipment) up to date and keep us in compliance for the next 10 years,” Thomas said.
“We would like to thank Senators Gillibrand and Schumer along with Congressman Bill Owens for their support as well as the award committee in recognizing that the small rural departments in northern New York provide a vital service to the people we serve.”
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said. “This federal investment will help improve the fire department’s equipment, help local firefighters do their work and keep families safe.”
The funding is allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program under the Department of Homeland Security.
