Roos men's lacrosse down Johnson State on Senior Day

(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s lacrosse team helped celebrate Senior Day with a convincing 17-4 win over Johnson State College on Sunday in Canton.

The Roos snapped a two-game slide with an impressive performance against the Badgers, making sure seniors Patrick Connelly (Chittenango, N.Y.) and Rob Gleason (Vestal, N.Y.) went out in style in their final home game with the Roos. Connelly and Gleason, senior captains who are tied for the team lead in scoring with 24 points apiece, were honored at halftime on Sunday along with their parents. Connelly, who led the team in scoring as a junior, has scored 30 goals with 23 assists for 53 points at SUNY Canton, and Gleason has scored 14 goals with 20 assists for 34 points.

Connelly scored two goals and had one assist against Johnson State, and Gleason handed out a game-high four assists.

SUNY Canton came out on top in most statistical categories on Sunday including shots (46-23), ground balls (48-42), and faceoffs (13-12). The Roos also forced 17 of the Badgers 36 turnovers, finished 3-for-4 in man up opportunities, and moved the ball efficiently converting 26 of 30 clear attempts (.866).

SUNY Canton built a 3-0 lead after the first quarter on goals from Connelly, junior Tanner Pratt (Canton, N.Y.) and sophomore Jason Thompson (Massena, N.Y.). The Roos scored three more goals to start the second half, including two from Thompson to open a 6-0 lead. The Badgers scored two in a row to close the gap to 6-2, but then Thompson set up Pratt and freshman Zarrien Sloan (Waterloo, N.Y.) to push the Roos lead back to a six-goal margin. Taner Cross scored late in the second quarter for Johnson State and SUNY Canton held a 9-3 lead at halftime.

The third and fourth quarters belonged to the Roos, as they held Johnson State to just one goal with just over one minute left in regulation. SUNY Canton pumped in six goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth to earn their second win in as many years over the Badgers.

Thompson finished with three goals and three assists. Pratt ended with four goals and an assist. Sophomore Taylor Caswell (Potsdam, N.Y.) added two goals and two assists, and sophomore Ryan Cardiff (Albany, N.Y.) and Sloan contributed two goals apiece.

Junior Corey Spuck (Rochester, N.Y.) made four saves in the first half, and freshman Jeff Hammond (Rensselaer Falls, N.Y.) stopped four shots in the second half.

Senior Kristian Daley (Canton, N.Y.), freshman Victor Rivera (Theresa, N.Y.), junior Terry Bradford (Hudson, N.H.), and freshman Alex Bonno (Colton, N.Y.) led a strong defensive effort with three caused turnovers apiece. Bonno collected a team-high six ground balls, and Bradford and Rivera had four each.

Cross finished with two goals and an assist for Johnson State, and Zach Jerome posted 11 saves in goal.

The Roos hit the road for their final two games at Oswego State on April 27 and Lyndon State on May 1.
