MADRID – In conjunction with the St. Lawrence County 250th celebration, a reenactment of the reciting of the Declaration of Independence was held on the steps of the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum's 1800s School House on Sept. 19.
As part of the ceremony, a reproduction of The Boston and Country Gazette Journal's July 22, 1776; front page was displayed to show those in attendance how the document was shared during that period. After the founders signing, it took quite some time for the document to make its way around the 13 colonies, so it was read at varying times.
Children who attended the event received a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a George Washington bookmark, and a flag. Reciters included Scott Wilson, Louisville, Chuck Goolden, Boise, Idaho, Roger Austin, Milledgeville, Ga. and Terry Tiernan, Madrid.
