POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (13-7, 8-5 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-19, 1-12) 84-68 at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) and freshman forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) each scored 16 points to lead the Bears. Senior forwards Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and Lawrence Coleman (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) paced the Red Dragons with 25 and 20 points, respectively.
Two Estramonte threes and a Kane Jumper got Potsdam off to a fast 8-3 start in the opening 2:40. However, Oneonta countered with a 22-7 run to grab a 25-15 advantage over the next seven minutes. The Bears closed the gap back to 30-23 with 7:33 left in the half, but the Red Dragons finished with an 18-11 flourish to take a 48-31 advantage into the locker room.
Freshman guard Nate Wyatte (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) opened the second half with a 3-pointer, but Oneonta extended its lead to 62-42 over the next five minutes. Senior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) answered with consecutive threes and Estramonte added a layup for an 8-0 Potsdam run that closed the gap to 12. The Red Dragons then put the game away with a 20-12 run en route to the 16-point win.
Lamerson finished with 12 points, while Wyatte and freshman forward Tyrone Adeyeye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) each added eight points. Sophomore guard Ian Schupp (New Hamilton, N.Y./Goshen) contributed nine points to the Oneonta cause.
The Red Dragons edged the Bears in shooting, 50.8-percent to 44.6, and rebounding, 38-32.
