POTSDAM -- A Potsdam woman recently set five national power lifting records and has qualified to compete in the World Championships.
Vanessa Babcock, 31, competed at the World Natural Powerlifting Federation’s National Tournament on Feb. 25 in Bordentown, N.J. Competing in the 114-pound weight class, she set national records in the 85-pound Strict Curl, 155-pound Bench Press, 275-pound Deadlift, 430-pound Iron Maiden, and 680-pound Full Power.
She also received awards for Best Overall Female Lifter.
The tournament was Babcock’s second professional competition as a powerlifter. Her first was the WNPF State Championships at Tupper Lake in October 2017, where she set four state records in her 105-pound weight class and received an award for Best Overall Female Lifter.
Based on her overall national competition score of 680, she will be headed to the WNPF World Championships Oct. 20 and 21 in Bordentown.
She is a 2004 graduate of Norwood-Norfolk Central School and is employed by Canton-Potsdam Hospital. She will continue her training at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Fitness Center in advance of the World Championships.
WNPF is a drug-free power lifting organization founded in 1986. According to their Facebook page, the WNPF World Championship Meet has hosted as many as 10 countries at a time with upwards of 400 competitors. More information can be found at www.wnpfpl.com.
