POTSDAM -- Aired on WCKN, Time Warner Digital Channel 30, at 7:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 22 and 23, North Country Matters repeats two shows taped earlier this fall.
The first show at 7:30 pm is the conversation NCM host Donna Seymour, AAUW- St. Lawrence County held with the new president of SUNY Canton, Dr. Zvi Szafran, who started work at the college this summer. Dr. Szafran discusses college access and affordability, the current student body and program offerings, and how SUNY Canton outreaches into the community.
He also talks about the college’s mission, the emphasis on and importance of STEM education, and how he is dealing with campus safety, which is an issue of national and local concern on college campuses. The YouTube link for this show is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiM0kae2gjY.
The second show at 8 p.m. features two staff members from the St. Lawrence Valley Renewal House for Victims of Family Violence. Valarie Dana, a Counselor and Advocate, and Caitlin Hill, the Legal Advocate, discuss Renewal House’s effort to educate people about domestic violence and the services they provide.
In addition to the warning signs of relationships that may be headed for trouble, the two also talk about community education efforts at local schools and colleges. They discuss the positive changes they are seeing on college campuses as male and female students begin to be more proactive about stopping sexual assault and taking ownership of individual and collective behaviors that endanger others.
