Potsdam Humane Society shares story of generous senior

POTSDAM – The Potsdam Humane Society is hoping that the story of a local senior citizen will inspire more people to contribute to the society and its new Potsdam Animal Shelter.

Bonnie Boyd, PHS board member and fundraising chair, says that Iris Anable “is a believer” in the cause of animal welfare in general, and in the new animal shelter on Madrid Avenue, which is still being paid for.

Boyd says that when fundraising for the building began in 2006, Anable pledged to donate $10 a month for a year.

“At the end of the year, Iris came to the shelter with her last check in hand, completing her $120 pledge,” Boyd noted in her annual report.

“She cheerfully announced the experience had not been in the least ‘painful,’” Boyd said, and Anable renewed her pledge for 2007, and every year since, amounting to more than $800 donated so far.

Boyd said that Dr. Michael and Barbara Maresca took the lead in the drive to replace the 30-year-old shelter, setting up a challenge to donors in 2009, to which the community responded generously.

And, Boyd said, Anable’s example can also be a source of inspiration to the community.

“If I can do this, I know others can,” said Anable. “Caring for animals is a very important thing to do, and a simple gift of $10 or more a month, can make a big difference.

“I challenge every animal lover to join me in making the commitment. You will feel so good when you do!”
