POTSDAM – A basement fire at a house in Potsdam was put out quickly, averting what could have been a fast-building blaze.

The Potsdam Fire Department responded at about 12:40 p.m. to a small apartment house at 6757 State Rt. 56 north of the village owned by Lowell Warner.

Warner told firefighters he was soldering pipes in the basement when he got a cell phone call and put down his torch, according to Potsdam Asst. Chief Danielle Rose.

The fire started and Warner called firefighters and alerted the one person who was upstairs.

Rose said the damage was limited to the front of the basement. The fire was put out in “tops, 20 minutes,” Rose said.

In addition to Potsdam volunteers and the Potsdam Rescue Squad, departments from Hannawa Falls, West Potsdam and Norwood responded, and West Stockholm firefighters stood by.
