Voters in the Canton Central School District voted down a plan to purchase two houses, which would have been demolished to create more parking.
The vote for 77 State Street was 719 to 159 and the vote for 79 State Street was 684 compared to 185, school officials said.
Canton school officials say they have major parking issues and the purchase would have created 60 new parking spaces and improved fire lanes and created a designated drop off area.
The properties were valued at $140,000 and $106,000.
Community members expressed the desire for the school to use existing property owned by the school in letters and Sound Offs to North Country Now and North Country This Week.
Voters approved a $29.1 million budget 646 to 211 that will see a tax levy increase of 2.75 percent. Additional support for the library passed with 619 yes votes to 246 no votes. The request to buy three buses was okayed by voters with a 690 to 170 vote.
Voters elected three people to the Board of Education. Margaret Sweeney received the most votes with 669, followed by 667 for Daniel Thomas and 629 for Patrick Hanss.
