Opinion: Humans can be selfish during troubling times, says Potsdam resident

In response to “Hopeful For Neutrality from Town Boards” which appeared in the April 5-11 issue of North Country This Week: Mr. Potenzano asked for an apology from the Concerned Citizens for Rural Preservation. (CCRP). I don't know of any rudeness toward you from a CCRP member; nevertheless, as a member I want to apologize for any rudeness and failures on our part.

We humans have a tendency to fail at times. We are inherently selfish and greedy. We have a problem being honest at all times. We are short-sighted. We think about our own protection and do not see the damage our actions and reactions may have caused in the heart and life of others.

When we feel threatened, the urge to fight or flee or freeze is strong. We are facing the threat of costly, inefficient. Dangerous, soon-to-be towers of junk scraping the sky right in our midst. There are numerous good reasons to fear them. I believe the few who welcome them shall one day deeply regret it. I care about you and wish your eyes could be opened before it is too late.

Our life here is short. Then we face our Creator to be judged. He is a judge that is so good and capable that not a one of us will get away with our sins.

Thankfully, His love and mercy has made a way for our pardon, if only we will accept it. He sent His Son who gave his lifeblood that we can go free. We may try ever so hard to overcome the selfishness and pride that inhere in us, we may even get ever so religious but none of that will erase our sins. We must give ourselves to Jesus Christ.

When we belong to Him, he gives us his Spirit. We must constantly let Him rule over our spirit to fulfill in us His commandment to love and forgive, even our enemies. I wish you all would experience the abundant life and freedom that comes from loving God. It's much, much better than money and other temporary things this world offers.

In this world selfishness, greed, hatred, and fighting continue. It costs us lots--innocent ones and guilty ones, sooner or later. These evils can bring upon us worse things than industrial wind turbines. Payday continues. Let me be on God's side, under His mercy and protection.
