OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg voters on Nov. 3 will choose a new mayor as well as several City Councilors.

Democrat and former St. Lawrence County legislator Sam ‘Vernon’ Burns is competing with Republican Ogdensburg City Councilor Wayne Ashley for the mayoral seat.

Both candidates have pushed economic development as the biggest issue facing the city.

Ogdensburg Mayor William Nelson currently holds the position, but announced he would not seek reelection.

For City Council, five candidates are competing for three seats.

Incumbent Democrat Jennifer Stevenson will attempt to hold on to her position. Other candidates include Democrat Timothy Davis, Republican David Price, Democrat James McCoy and Republican James R. Amo.

Both McCoy and Amo have ran unsuccessfully for city council in the past.

The other two vacant seats are held by Councilor William Hosmer, who will not seek reelection, and Councilor Ashley, who is running for the mayoral position instead.
