OGDENSBURG — Ogdensburg expects to have a new councilor appointed by July 9, and those interested in the seat must act soon.

The city is looking to fill the vacancy left by Councilor Michael Powers who resigned June 8 at the recent council meeting.

Residents interested in serving on the Ogdensburg City Council have until June 22 to submit their applications to fill the council vacancy currently under review by the city's Vacancy Committee, according to a press release from the city.

The committee met Tuesday, June 9, to establish procedures for accepting and reviewing applications from prospective candidates.

According to the release from the city, applicants must submit a resume detailing their qualifications and experience, along with a cover letter explaining why they wish to serve on the City Council. Materials must be received by City Clerk Cathy Jock no later than 4 p.m. on June 22.

Applications may be delivered in person to the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 330 Ford St., Room 4, Ogdensburg, mailed, faxed to 315-393-1136, or emailed to cjock@ogdensburg.org.

City Hall office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the office closed for lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Applicants may also submit materials outside regular business hours by placing a sealed envelope marked "City Clerk Cathy Jock" in the City Hall drop box located near the handicap entrance on Caroline Street.

Officials noted that all email submissions will receive a delivery confirmation. Applicants who do not receive confirmation within 24 hours are encouraged to contact Jock at 315-393-3540 to verify receipt.

Questions regarding the application process may be directed to Vacancy Committee members Mark Knowlton at 315-322-1714 or Doug Loffler at 315-528-2351.

The Vacancy Committee is scheduled to meet June 23 at 1 p.m. in Room 8 at City Hall to review and discuss candidate submissions. The meeting is open to the public.

The committee must recommend three candidates to the City Council at least seven days before the council votes to fill the vacancy.

The City Council is expected to make the appointment during a special meeting scheduled for July 8 at 6 p.m.
