Police said the preliminary investigation determined Aaron S. Love, 31, was the operator of the snowmobile that was traveling west on the snowmobile trail off the Wallace Road. Police were called to the scene about 3:12 a.m.
Love was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, police said.
State police were assisted by Massena fire and rescue and Louisville fire and rescue.
Love was a volunteer firefighter for the Louisville Fire Department. He was not on duty at the time of the incident.
