MASSENA -- A Norfolk man is charged with several offenses after village police say he hit a utility pole and gas pumps while driving drunk on a revoked license with a high blood alcohol level early Sunday morning.
Nicholas R. Comins, 25, of 274 Lacomb Road is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a felony, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, no seatbelt, failure to use designated lane, crossing hazard marking and refusal to take a breath test.
Police said they witnessed Comins driving erratically heading south on Main Street. They tried to pull him over, and he ended up striking a utility pole in the Sunoco parking lot on South Main Street. He tried to reverse out, nearly hit the police car, struck the gas pumps and stopped. Police said he was charged with leaving the scene because he didn’t stop after hitting the utility pole.
Comins refused a breath test, police said, but they were later able to determined his blood alcohol level was .24 percent.
Court documents say that when police asked him how many drinks he had, Comins said “enough,” adding that he was drinking beer at Nadeau’s, Andrews Street.
Comins was arraigned in Massena court and released under supervision of the county Probation Department. He is to abide by conditions including an alcohol and substance abuse evaluation, alcohol and drug testing, he is forbidden from consuming alcohol and conforming to a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew.
