Men's cross country Smith Individual Champ, Saints win 21st straight Liberty League crown

St. Lawrence University's men's cross country team took five of the top seven places in Saturday's Liberty League Championships on the Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course and won its 21st straight league cross country title with the third lowest score since 2002.

The Saints finished with 19 points with RPI second with 57, RIT third with 90, Vassar fourth with 117, Union fifth with 123, Clarkson sixth with 137, Hobart seventh with 230 and Bard eighth with 242. SLU, ranked seventh nationally and second in the Atlantic Region will be out to earn a team bid to the NCAA Championships when it runs at the NCAA Regional hosted by Geneseo on Nov. 14.

Saint junior Joseph Smith was the individual champion as he led the 118 runner field with a time of 25:36.25 on the 8000 meter course. Smith became the 15th Saint individual champion since 1995, but the first since 2012.

Thomas Caulfield was second in 25:41.58 and freshman Sidi Abdoulaye was third win 26:46.22. Wesley Kirui finished sixth in 26:09.84 and Spencer Patterson was seventh in 26:18.97 as the Saints placed their five scorers within a span of 43 seconds.

Ben Fishbein was ninth in 26:22.01 and Brandon Moran finished 21st in 27:05.42 to complete the Saint top seven.

Other Saint finishes in the competition included a 27th by Adam Bankert in 27:15.01, 30th by Jonathan Mitchell in 27:18.74, Caleb Kessler was 39th in 27:32.99, Jack Martin 48th in 27:48.83, Logan Mancuso 53rd in 27:59.51, Devon Calvin 55th in 28:01.38, Zane Belden 57th in 28:02.28, Evan Page 61st in 28:03.81, Ellis Toll 70th in 28:15.10, William Bronner 71st in 28:15.43, Zach Lang 82nd in 28:42.36, Alec MacCrory was 86th in 28:48.59, Tim O'Brien 87th in 28:512.94, John Gillolly 95th in 29:30.50, David Bain 100th in 29:53.69 and Fletcher Starnes finished 101st in 29:54.48.
